Funai Biko
The only geographical booklet on Edo compiled by the Edo Shogunate.
Also known by the separate title Gofunai Biko. This work was organized to serve as reference for the Gofunai Fudoki to be compiled by the Tokugawa Shogunate, and was compiled in 2 parts consisting of a principal part and a sequel from 1826 to 1830. The 145 volumes of the main part contain articles on Edo Castle, streets, historic spots, etc.
The 147 volumes of the sequel are also known as the Gofunai Jisha Biko and contain information on the origins and historic associations of temples and shrines. The Gofunai Fudoki was lost in the fire at the imperial palace in 1872, however the Gofunai Biko escaped intact.

It is most probably from the year 993, when the statue of Yakushi Nyorai was made.

a Shingon temple in Itoshima, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. Its honorary sangō prefix is Sennyo-ji Daihiō-in (千如寺大悲王院).
It is also referred to as Raizan Kannon (雷山観音).

According to legend, Sennyo-ji was founded in the Nara period by 清賀上人 Seiga, a priest who came from India.

Due to its position in the north overlooking the Sea of Genkai, it has been expected from the shogunate as a prayer temple of the foremost line against the Mongol invasions of Japan during the Kamakura period. In its heyday has been said to be lined up to 300 priest living quarters around the temple. Sennyo-ji is a general term of this temple, and it is also referred to as the priest's lodge that was located next to the middle sanctuary, the present day site of Ikazuchi-jinja. The wooden Avalokiteśvara statue is the subject of mountainous faith that has been enshrined in the main hall.
Afterwards the priest living quarters were ruined during the long war between Muromachi and Sengoku periods, there only remains the priest's lodge. In 1573, however, the main hall was founded by Kuroda Tsugutaka (1703–1775), the 6th feudal lord of Kuroda clan. Big maple trees, which has been designated as a natural monument of Fukuoka prefecture, has been said to be planted by him.

Mount Rai has two sanctuaries, one at the middle of the mountain and one at its peak. The middle sanctuary was founded in honor of Emperor Suinin whom he is conventionally considered to have reigned from 29 BC to AD 70. Both sanctuaries have been governed by the temple until the Edo period. However, the priest's lodge in the middle sanctuary was abolished by the separation of Shinto from Buddhism, introduced after the Meiji Restoration. Cultural properties, such as Buddha statues including the main Buddha and the ancient documents, were moved to the main hall.

The temple is also known for being a great place for cherry blossom viewing in the spring, and many people visit in the autumn to see the fall foliage.

Priest Seiga brought brought seeds from camellia (tsubaki　椿) and made oil from them for the first time.
Mount Aburayama 油山 (597 m)　in Fukuoka is named in memory of this event.

The main statue is 阿弥陀如来 Amida Nyorai.

A Tendai Buddhist temple, located on the slopes of Mount Futago, the highest mountain on the Kunisaki Peninsula. The temple was established in 718 by Saint Ninmon Bosatsu 仁聞菩薩 and became the central temple of Rokugo-Manzan 六郷満山.

The founder was 英明和尚 Eimei, who practised austerities for 50 days, eating none of the five grains 五穀断ちの「求聞持秘法」. He had a dream of 88 figures of Kobo Daishi, changed his name to 秘鍵大師 and built this temple.
In the main hall is a statue of 十一面千手観世音菩薩 Kannon with 1000 arms and 11 heads.
The statue of Fudo Myo-O is in the 護摩堂 Gomado Hall.
This statue was made to heal the ill father of Eimei.

The temple had been built in 1181 on the 鬼門 "Demon Gate" side of the castle to protect it from evil influence.

Three main statues of Amida Sanzon 阿弥陀三尊
from the Nanboku period.
Other statues from 弘法大師 Kobo Daishi, 毘沙門天 Bishamonten
and 勝軍地蔵菩薩 Shogun Jizo Bosatsu.
In the compound is also a shrine for the deity

Founded in 1152 by 幸覚院一世.
It fell in despair, but was rebuilt in the Kamakura period by priest
Choojun 澄舜 Chojun.
It is closely related to the Shimazu family, especially 島津忠親 Shimazu Tadachika (1512 - 1571), who had it rebuilt in 1555 in order to help his people and protect the castle 飫肥城 Objjo.
There is a group of five-storied grave stone pagodas in the garden, memorial of the 島津家 Shimazu clan.
In 1831 the temple buildings were lost to fire and it was abolished in the Meiji period.
Since 1879 it had been re-built due to the deep faith of the local people.
The present 本堂 Hondo hall dates back to 1976.

黒田忠之 Kuroda Tadayuki (1602 - 1654) and became the Kuroda clan temple.
The High Priest 法印正範大和尚 resided here.
The main statue is of 薬師如来 Yakushi Nyorai.

On request of the Kamakura Bakufu government in 1244, 藤原親房 Fujiwara Chikafusa came to the region to supress the Heike completely. He changed his name to 門司 Moji and unified 6 districts under this name. In the course of history the region was governed by various local lords.
The temple is located in the South-Western part of the Moji peninsula and overlooks the 周防灘 Suo-Nada sea.
The founder of the temple, 心玉阿闍梨 Shingyoku Ajari, was the son of a rich farming family. He build it in 1863 as a place to pray for protection from fire and other natural disasters.
In the temple compound are some old trees and two special statues of Jizo Bosatsu

福岡県宗像市吉田966 / Yoshida, Munakata, Fukuoka

Founded by Kobo Daishi in 806, after he had visited 宗像大社 Munakata Shrine.
He carved statues of the three deities venerated at Munakata,
大日如来 Dainichi Nyoria, 釈迦如来 Shaka Nyorai and
薬師如来 Yakushi Nyorai.

Then he carved Fudo Myo=O to protect the people from all kinds of disaster.
「真言秘密の大法を伝え得たるは、
危難をお救い下さった不動明王様のお蔭に他ならず」

The temple is known for its beautiful blossoms in all seasons.

Toochooji 東長寺 Tocho-Ji / 東長密寺 Tochomitsu-Ji

結願不動 - Ketsugan Fudo

This is the last temple of the Kyushu Fudo Pilgrimage.
ketsugan, kechigan means the fulfillment of the vow to complete a pilgrimage.


福岡市博多区御供所町２－４ / Gokushomachi, Hakata Ward, Fukuoka

The temple was founded by Kūkai Kobo Daishi, who had come back from his travels to China and landed in Hakata.
It was completed in 806, making it the oldest Shingon temple in Kyushu.

The main statue is a standing Kannon with 1000 arms and 11 faces.
十一面千手観音 Juichimen Senju Kannon

The temple had the strong support of 黒田家墓 Kuroda Tadayuki (1602 - 1652), the second lord of Fukuoka province, who has his grave in the temple compound.

The temple is also Nr. 24 on a pilgrimage to
九州24地蔵 24 Jizo Bosatsu temples in Kyushu.

Fukuoka Daibutsu (Great Buddhist statue)
The carving of the statue started in 1988 and it took 4 years to finish. The statue is 10.8 meters in height and 30 tons in weight. This is the largest statue of a seated Buddha among the ones in Japan. The ring of light behind the Buddha stands 16.1 meters in height and is carved with numerous images of Buddha. Besides the statue is a treasure exhibition hall.
