Fudosawa Tsubakurodani Valley

- quote
Tsubakuro-dani つばくろ谷 Tsubakuro valley
The view of the dense trees closing in on 不動沢 Fudousawa Creek deep inside Tsubakuro Valley in Fukushima Prefecture is splendid. It is also one of the most famous fall-leaf viewing spots along the Bandai-azuma skyline, as well as being one of the eight great Azuma viewing spots.
The name Tsubakuro comes from the fact that Asian spotted martins (or iwatsubame in Japanese) often used to fly through and above the valley.
A new Fudousawa Bridge,
rebuilt in 2002, allows for visitors to look down on the narrow valley from 80m above. The view of the valley during autumn is breathtaking and the contrast between the variously colored leaves and the white waters of the creek is quite beautiful.

shibu 田螺 Tanishi, mud snail

Before the hatsu uma 初午 First Day of the Horse people put salt in the four corners of the yururi 圍爐裡 / ユルリ (irori 囲炉裏) open hearth。Then they throw mud snails on the roof. If they reach far to the other side, there will be no fire for the coming year.
Tanishi are the messengers of Fudo Myo-O.
If eaten, they will cure eye disease.

After an operation for an artificial hip joint she was unconscious for 4 days. In the evening of the 4th day in the room for the nurses there appeared Fudo Myo-O in the left corner of the ceiling. In the middle appeared many 地蔵様 Jizo figures and in the right there was 観音様 Kannon sama leading a child.

A man named from the Miura clan named 三浦左近国清 Miura Sakon Kunikiyo lived in 太田村別所 Ota village 別所館 Besshonotate. He went to the Fudo Waterfall at 馬場村 Babamura to pray for a wife. That night Fudo appeared in his dream and told him, that in this world there was no wife to fit him. He should go to the pond at 五台山 Mount Godaisan where the tenjin 天人 heavenly maiden come to bath and snatch one of their hagoromo 羽衣 feather mantles. Kunikiyo did as he dreamt, got the mantle and went back home. Soon the maiden came to his home and wanted her mantle back, but eventually she stayed on and became his wife. They had two sons and one daughter.
When the children had grown up, the maiden took her mantle, said good bye and went back to heaven. Kunikiyo was very sad and his daughter was even more sad. She eventually threw herself into the pond and died. Now there is even a stone memorial in her memory at the pond, 姫塚 Himezuka.

Two farmers were sleeping in the fields during lunchtime, when suddenly a large boulder came rolling down and stopped right beside them. "This must be a stone to venerate Kannon Bosatsu"!
Then some specialists came from Aizu Wakamatsu and said it should be placed at the Waterfall of Kitamori 北森の滝 where Fudo Myo-O is venerated.
So the villagers carried the stone near the waterfall, shounting "Kan man baran" all the way. カンマンバラン Kanmanbaran is the local name of the Fudo Myo-O.

. Fukushima - Iwashiro province 岩代国.
Nishiniidono, Nihonmatsu, Fukushima

Once upon a time
in the hamlet of Mokusho-uchi 杢少内 (Mukkyoji in local dialect ムッキョジ) in 西新殿 Nishiniidono there was a wooden statue of Fudo Myo-O お不動様 in the Fudo Hall on the hill.
The villagers had great faith in the statue and came to pray and worship here every day with all kinds of wishes.
"Dear Fudo Sama, please let us have a bountiful rice harvest this year!"
"Please let my father get well soon!"
"Please let me become pregnant with a healthy baby!"

In the villge lived a man called Gohei 五兵衛.
He went to his fields every day to work hard.
And then one morning, when he came to his rice field he found a mud snail lying beside the path.
Gohei, who was a gentle man, began to talk to the mud snail:
"A very good morning to you, dear Mister Mudsnail たにしどん !"
The mud snail looked at him and replied
"Good morning to you too, Gohei san!"

On this day Gohei worked as usual till the evening and then went home.
Next morning he found two mud snails lying beside the path.

"Well, what do we have here! You found a friend, dear Mister Mudsnail! Good morning to you both!"
And this day too Gohei worked all day long in the fields.

And from this day on when he came to the field, he saw one more and one more and one more mud snail and greeted them all with a friendly "Good Morning".

Then after a few days he realized that the many mud snails begun to move on toward the hill.
"Oh well, what do we have now? All of you Mudsnails going to move on! What a surprise!"
And as he looked they almost reached the hill and were gone.

Now it was midnight. The village had become quiet and all had gone to sleep.
Suddenly there was a sound: jaan, jaaaan 「ジャーン、ジャーン」

The noisy sound from a temple bell was heard - oh dear - there was a fire!
The farmers woke up and run out of their homes to have a look.
"Over there, on the hill, at the Fudo Hall!"
Great flames lightened the sky above the Fudo Hall.
"Hurry up, get some water . . . hurry hurry!"

They all run up the hill and begun to carry water from the river way below it. They all worked in a frenzy . . . but it could not be helped, the Fudo Hall was almost burned down.
"How terrible, our dear Fudo sama, your hall is all burned down!"
"Our dear Fudo is made of wood . . . he has burned down now, how sad!"
They all stood by the burning remains and wept loudly, folding their hands in prayer.

Then came the next morning and it became light again.
"Look, hey look at that!"
Gohei raised his voice and pointed at the statue of Fudo Myo-O. It was all black now but still it was their beloved Fudo!
Gohei walked closer to have a good look.
All around the statue were the mud snails, protecting him and got burned themselves.
With little plops and plumps the finally fell down from the statue - quite dead.

But the statue had remained in its full splendor, thanks to the mud snails!

The surprised villagers all run up to the statue of Fudo.
"What a miracle! It seems the mud snails knew there would be a fire and had all moved up the hill and protected him! What a miracle indeed! Thanks to our dear Fudo Sama!"
They all wept in gratitude.
Later they had a new Fudo Hall built and by that time - as you might guess -
the statue was called

Once the Fudo Hall was all in flames, so the statue flew for a secure place in a rock cave. This is the reason why the halo of the statue has scratches - from the rock cave. So this statue does not have a halo any more.
In 1731 during the Great Earthquake on the 7th day of the 9th lunar month a huge boulder came down from the mountain behind the hall, but only one pillar of the small hall was crashed and like a miracle again the statue was not hurt.

. Narita Fudo 成田不動尊 .
Temple Shinshooji 新勝寺 Shinsho-Ji

The main statue is the beneficial Fudo Myo-O 大聖不動明王.

In September 1888 the permission from the Head Temple in Narita was given to built a hall for Fudo Myo-O 青柳に不動堂 and hold rituals there.
The Hall was very popular and soon in 1908 the temple was build.
Pilgrims came from all over Northern Japan to pray here.
But during WW II, in the air raids of July 1945 most buildings were lost to fire.

All parishioners and friends of the temple collected money for the reconstruction, so in July 1957 a bigger and more beautiful Hall could be erected and the statue of Fudo Myo-O seated there.
Soon more buildings followed for the appeasement of local deities, 稲荷堂 Inari-Do for the Inari Fox Deity, 清瀧権現堂 Seiryu Gongen Do (for the Blue/Green Dragon Deity).

The most important festivals are the Setsubun Throwing of Beans in February and the Floating of Lanterns in July.

The Sakate samurai were called 小場 Koba before they changed their name around 1386.
The lord at that time, 小場大炊助義躬, had this one temple build outside the castle compound for the villagers to pray.

The main statue is Yakushi Nyorai, 薬師如来, Buddha of Healing and Medicine.
Other statues are
十二支守護佛 12 protector deities, Dainichi 大日 and Amida Nyorai 阿彌陀如来, 不動明王 Fudo Myo-O, the Bosatsu Kannon 観音, Kokuzo 虚空蔵, Monju 文殊, Fugen and 普賢 and Seishi 勢至菩薩. Most of them have their own halls now.
The statues are said to have been carved by the villagers themselves.

- quote
Ōdate (大館市 Ōdate-shi) is a city in Akita
Ōdate is located in the mountains of northern Akita Prefecture, with the Ou Mountains on the east and Aomori Prefecture to the north. The city is a basin surrounded by mountains on all sides. Part of the city is within the borders of the Towada-Hachimantai National Park.
Much of the city area is covered in forest. Due to its inland location, the city is noted for its heavy snowfall in winter.
- - - History
The area of present-day Ōdate was part of ancient Dewa Province, although it remained outside of the control of the Yamato court until well into the Heian period.
During the Edo period, the area came under the control of the Satake clan, who ruled the northern third of the province from Kubota Domain, and who maintained a secondary fortification at Ōdate Castle.
The castle was destroyed during the Boshin War. After the start of the Meiji period, the area became part of Kitaakita District, Akita Prefecture in 1878. During the Meiji period, the discovery of "black ore" (sphalerite and galena - a mixture of zinc, lead, gold, silver, and other precious metals), led to the development of numerous mines in the area, including the Hanaoka mine; however, the deposits were depleted by the mid-Showa period.
On June 20, 2005, the towns of Hinai and Tashiro (both from Kitaakita District) were merged into Ōdate, increasing its population (as of 2011) to 77,703 and the area of the city to 913.70 km2 (352.78 sq mi).
