Teppo-zuke
The ends of shiro-uri, oriental pickling gourd, are sliced off and the seeds removed to create a hollow tube. Stuffed with red peppers, the shiro-uri is then marinated in soy sauce. This pickle, a specialty of the area around Narita airport near Tokyo, takes its name from the long, thin shape, like the barrel of a rifle (teppo) .

- quote
Wooden figure of Fudō Myō-ō
Heian period, 12th century AD
'The Immoveable King of Light'

Fudō (Sanskrit: Acala, or Candamaharosana) is one of the Myō-ō (Vidyarajas), 'Kings of Light', personified spells and protectors of the esoteric Shingon sect of Japanese Buddhism. He is a constant enemy of illusion, pointing the way to enlightenment beyond the illusion of life and death. His name, Fudō, means 'Unmoving' and refers to the unchanging reality beneath his fierce exterior.

Fudō's attributes are the sword and the rope. With the sword he cuts through the evils of the world of illusion to show the reality beneath. Fudō is considered to be the patron of swordsmen. The sword in this statue is of particular interest, being in the shape of the sankosho or three-pronged vajra (thunderbolt), a Buddhist ceremonial instrument symbolizing the Buddha, the Lotus, and the kongotai or ultimate reality. With his rope Fudō ties the enemies of enlightenment. He is sometimes shown as the leader of the five 'Kings of Light', or with his attendants Kongara Dōji and Shitaka Dōji.

Early statues show Fudō with two staring eyes and a pair of fearful fangs, as here. The piece is carved in ichiboku zukuri style (sculpted from a single block of wood), the arms made separately.

- quote
Katsukawa Shunshō, The actor Ichikawa Danjūrō
as Fudō Myō-ō, a colour woodblock print
Edo period, 11th month, AD 1780

A Kabuki actor plays a ferocious deity

Shunshō was the first woodblock print artist to design prints of Kabuki actors which actually captured their likeness (nigao-e). In this example, the immediately recognizable long nose, down-turned mouth and small close-set eyes of Danjūrō V have been superimposed on to the statue-like figure of the deity Fudō Myō-ō.

The Buddhist deity Fudō Myō-ō, 'The Immoveable God of Light', is the chastiser of enemies of the faith. He is always depicted carrying a sword to cut through evil and a rope to bind the enemies of enlightenment. He was also regarded as the tutelary (guardian) deity of the leading Danjūrō Ichikawa line of actors. The deity appears in the play Kite kaeru nishiki no wakayaka in an enormously popular scene, 'The stone statue of Fudō' (Sekizō no Fudō). Danjūrō V played this part four times. This print probably celebrates the opening of the season (kaomise) performance at the Nakamura theatre in the eleventh month of 1780. The deity stands on a rock below a waterfall, surrounded by flames, grasping his attributes of a sword and rope.

- quote
Totomi province
As with many of the provinces that can be paired as 'front' or 'back', Totomi province can be paired with Omi province, for while Omi is the "near faint sea", Totomi is the "distant faint sea". This is likely a reference to Lake Hamana and may have originated from its position in antiquity as the outer reaches of the Yamato polity (Hara 1986). In 642, an imperial edict conscripting workers from around the country designated that span as 'from Totomi in the east to Aki in the west'.

Throughout history, Totomi has been closely connected with the provinces of Ise and Mikawa due to their geographical locations. According to the Nihongi, by the early 8th century, soon after a visit by Empress Jito (r. 686-697) in 702, Totomi was designated as a chugoku, or "province of middling distance" from the capital, while Mikawa was considered a kinkoku, or "province near to" the capital.

The Tokaido, or Eastern Sea Route, was officially named in the latter half of the 7th century and passed north of Lake Hamana. This was one of the routes designated throughout the country for conducting official business, and continued to be used throughout Japan's history, later becoming one of the major routes for daimyo traveling to Edo for the Sankin Kotai.

Since the mid-5th century, the Mononobe family and their kin appear to have been powerful in the region as provincial chieftains. Evidence including genealogies, place names, and local legends seem to point to a connection with the Mononobe playing a large role in the early history of Totomi and nearby provinces.

In 772, eight townships were carved out of Saya district to form the Yamana district. Of those eight, six were listed in the Heian-period Wamyosho. A Tokugawa period gazeteer, Kakegawa shiko, mentions that the Yamana district was so named by dropping the 'shi' off of Yamanashi--possibly the original name for the district.

The temple originally belonged to Tendai-shu Buddhist sect then changed to Jodo-shu followed by Shingon-shu. In the early 17th century, dispute arose between Jodo-shu and Shingon-shu over rights to control Byodo-in. In 1654, a Tendai Buddhist priest return to Byodo-in and founded a sub-temple that later became Saisho-in.
Now same dispute arose between Tendai-shu and Jodo-shu. In 1681, the administrator for religious affairs arbitrated between them and Tendai-shu sect Saisho-in and Jodo-shu sect Jodo-in have been cooperating and managing Byodo-in since then.

- quote
Asahisan Fudoji Temple in Fukui city.

Built in 1711, the statues of this temple have been protecting local people here from natural disasters and evils in their lives. Asahisan can roughly be translated as 'a mountain of morning sun'.
Before the temple was built, people were suffering from natural disasters. Since there was a saying here that if Fudomyoo (Acala) is placed in the morning sun he would save humans from harm's way, people built this temple at the foot of Mt. Asuwa, aka, the place under the morning sun (Asahisan) in the hope that the Fudomyoo would protect them. When you look at the formidable-looking statues of Fudomyoo here, you may probably be convinced that they could truly protect us!

Mikawa Province (三河国 Mikawa no kuni)
in the area that today forms the eastern half of Aichi Prefecture. Its abbreviated form name was Sanshū (三州 or 参州). Mikawa bordered on Owari, Mino, Shinano, and Tōtōmi Provinces.

Mikawa is classified as one of the provinces of the Tōkaidō. Under the Engishiki classification system, Mikawa was ranked as a “superior country” (上国) and a “near country” (近国).

Mikawa is mentioned in records of the Taika Reform dated 645, as well as various Nara period chronicles, including the Kujiki, although the area has been settled since at least the Japanese Paleolithic period, as evidenced by numerous remains found by archaeologists.

Saikooji 西光寺 Saiko-Ji, Mie

白山町腹ごもり不動明王 - Hakusancho Village, Mie
A legend of old times, told in Ieki 家城, at South Ieki 南家城 at the temple Saikooji 西光寺 Saiko-Ji:

The parent is young, but the child is old, how come ?

Here is an amazing story about a child that was born before its parents.
The story is told at temple Saikooji 西光寺 and dates back about 1200 or 1300 years.
At that time there came a meandering priest to Ieki and asked for a place to stay over night.
The farmers were kind and one asked him to stay at his simple home.

Next morning the priest took out a Buddha statue from his backpack and presented it to his host.
"This is a talisman Buddha for you to keep!!
And then he left.

The farmer came calling after him:
"Just a moment, please tell me your name."
But the figure of the priest was nowhere to be seen any more.

So the farmer opened the parcel and saw the statue of Fudo Myo-O.
"How wonderful, how special, I don't really deserve this!"
And he prayed to the statue devoutly.
The story went around the village and others suggested that the priest must have been Kukai Kobo Daishi and all prayed to the statue.

Some also gave money and soon there was enough to build the temple Saiko-Ji for the statue.
Thus passed more than 300 years in the village of Ieki.
Another learned priest visited the village and said:

"This is such a special statue of Fudo Myo-O, you can not just keep it like that!"
So he carved a much bigger statue and placed the original small one in it's stomach.
This is why the statue is now called
"The Statue of Pregnant Fudo Myo-O". 腹ごもり不動明王

Since the small statue was carved much earlier, it is said that

"the child is old, but the parent is young".
This venerable statue is now shown every 12 years and many come to pray here.
