. Iwatsuki negi 岩槻葱 leek from Iwatsuki .
It has been out of use for many years but now revived by some diligent farmers. It is a special leek with 10 to 20 stems growing from the same stem. The white stems are about 20 cm long, and the soft green leaves are also eaten. It tasts rather sweet when cut fresh and put on a grill, the whole white and green plant.

The town uses this leek to revitaize the region,
"negiwai no machi" 「ぶらり岩槻観光『ねぎわい』マップ」.
(negiwai is a pun with nigiwai 賑わい bustling, being busy)

and his disciple
Ane, An-E 安慧 (795 - 868)
student of Ennin Jigaku Daishi at Mount Hieizan.

Another record dates it to 1688, as part of the Haguro Mountain Shugendo.



The sailors from the Matsumaebune 松前船 trade ships from Hokkaido to Osaka passed here. The sailors of the famous ship 辰悦丸 Shinetsu Maru owned by Takadaya Kahei came here to pray for safety on the sea. Maybe Kahei also payed for the stone steps for a better access.
There is also an anchor 錨 of the Shinetsu-Maru in the precincts.

. Takadaya Kahei 高田屋嘉兵衛 (1769 - 1827) .
In 1795, he constructed a ship named Shinetsu-maru with a displacement of 417 tons in Dewa (Yamagata and Akita Prefectures) and captained it. The following year he opened trading stores with the name of Takadaya in Hyogotsu and Hakodate, and started selling goods he transported between Ezo and the Osaka area.

Settsu no Kuni 88 Henro Temples 摂津国八十八ケ所

Settsu Province (摂津国 Settsu no kuni) was a province of Japan, which today comprises the eastern part of Hyōgo Prefecture and the northern part of Osaka Prefecture.
It was also referred to as Tsu Province (津国 Tsu no kuni) or Sesshū (摂州).
Osaka and Osaka Castle were the main center of the province.



During the Sengoku period, the Miyoshi clan ruled Settsu and its neighbors, Izumi and Kawachi, until they were conquered by Oda Nobunaga. The provinces were ruled subsequently by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The regents of Hideyoshi's son soon quarreled, and when Ishida Mitsunari lost the Battle of Sekigahara, the area was given to relatives of Tokugawa Ieyasu. It was from then on divided into several domains, including the Asada Domain.
Sumiyoshi taisha
was designated as the chief Shinto shrine (Ichinomiya　一ノ宮) for the province.
During the Sengoku period
Settsu became the main exporting centre of matchlock firearms to the rest of Japan.

In former times, the Kinki region was divided into five provinces:
山城 Yamashiro、大和 Yamato、摂津 Settsu、河内 Kawachi and 和泉 Izumi.

The pilgrimage to 88 Henro temples in Settsu was started by Saint Kekkai 月海上人 in the end of the Edo period.
During WW II many temples were burned down and this pilgrimage has become out of reach. But in 1980 it was revived.

Most temples can be reached within one hour from Central Osaka, which makes this pilgrimage a favorite with Henro Pilgrims.

The main statue of each pilgrim temple is different.

Itabashi Fudo-son,
or formally named Seian-san Ganjoji Fudoin Temple, is a temple of Shingon Sect. The temple was established by the great priest Kukai in 808. It had been burnt down by several fires, and in the 16th century, the temple was rebuilt by a high ranked Shingon Sect priest. The Fudo-son (the Buddhist divinity of fire) at this temple is worshipped by a lot of people for his power of bringing about easy delivery and successful childcare.
There are a lot of cultural properties at this temple including National Important Cultural Properties of the statues of Fudo Myoo and Ryo-doji, both of which were carved by Kukai himself, and prefectural Important Cultural Properties of the Main Hall, Sakura-Gate, and the 3-story Pagoda. The 3-story Pagoda was renovated in 1996.
This is one of the few temples in the prefecture which are composed of seven major buildings.

The bell tower has been reconstructed in 1844.

The main Fudo Statue has been declared a sacred and hidden by Saint Akimoto 淳元上人 in 1714 during a reconstruction of the temple. It is hidden behind the closed doors of its sanctuary and should not been shown again. Later it was shown every 25 years.
The statue is 5尺 high.
Before showing the statue, there are special rituals to be performed
omoirkae, o-morikae 御守替 and kangen omorikae 還元御守替.

When the statue had to be re-located to the main hall due to repair work in its own hall in the beginning of the Showa period, many unmarried men of the village had to perform severe purification rituals before carrying the statue to the main hall - and later back to the repaired Fudo Hall.

The next showing of the statue 本尊大開帳 is scheduled for 2016.

In the summer of 1995 the Fudo Hall was hit by lightning and a fire started. Thanks to the quick action of the head priest, the statue was transported outside and the Fudo had again shown his power of hibuse - surviving a fire.
The following year the burned beams and decorations of the temple were renewed and now the Fudo Statue is in its own space again.

Once upon a time,
an unknown monk came to the lake of Chuzen-Ji in Nikko to make ablutions in the waters and pray. After 100 days his vow was fulfilled. On the surface of the lake he saw a beautiful light coming near him. It was a statue of Fudo Myo-O - says the legend.
The monk was overwhelmed with joy and cried, taking the statue in his arms. Then he followed flow of the river, walking down the waterfall, all the way South. He prayed:
"Please, please let me find the right place where I can be of help to all people past, present and future."

During the daytime he walked down at the riverside, at night he slept in the wilderness, always trusting the bond he had established with Fudo Myo-O.
Then one day, when he had reached the small hamlet of Otome 乙女の里, the statue of Fudo Myo-O suddenly became very heavy and he could not continue walking. He placed the statue by his side to rest for a while.
When he tried to pick it up again, the statue had become so heavy it would not move any more.

Now the monk was convinced this was the region Fudo Myo-O had choose for him. So he asked the local people for their permission to build a hall for Fudo and placed the statue there for worship.
The place is now called 不動塚 Fudo Zuka - Fudo Mound in Otome Kanzawa 乙女寒沢.
The Fudo Hall has changed place a few more times and is now at its present location at Fudo Hara 不動原 in the compound of temple 泉龍寺 Senryu-Ji. According to ancient records, the temple had been constructed in 1333.

During the 南北朝 Nanboku Period around 1333 there was a lot of fighting of the Oyama clan 小山義政 (Oyama Yoshimasa, ? - 1382) and the temple was burned down, but the statue was never damaged. So people began to call it

and believed in his power more and more.

during repair work in the Showa period, they found a small part on his back side scorched by fire.

During the Edo period when Tokugawa Ieyasu passed the region he gave some land to the temple and Fudo, 「不動仏供領」.
Later they built a landing place for boats carrying construction wood for the building of the Toshogu Shrine in Nikko.

In the Mid-Edo period around 1721 the Fudo Hall was in dire need of repair. So the head priest of that time, Saint Akimoto 淳元上人 decided to built it anew. Many people offered money or gold, others came to work for free. Once the hall was finished, the statue was placed behind closed doors as a hidden statue, 秘仏 hibutsu .

It is about 20 meters in diameter and 3.5 m high.
Said to be from the early to mid-Jomon period.

a dragon in the clouds
This drgon lived in the nearby pond and was finally allowed to fly up into the clouds.
Every year during the O-Bon dance rituals, it comes back, shapeshifts as a woman and joins the dancers.

福島県いわき市平赤井字赤井嶽１ - 水晶山玉蔵院常福寺

The main statue of this temple is Yakushi Nyorai, Buddha of Medicine.

In 724 there was a great earthquake in the region and famine and diseases followed. To help the poor people a temple to the Buddha of Healing was erected in 806 by priest Genkan 善無畏三蔵 (大和国鷲峰山の住僧源観上人).
Other sources quote Tokuitsu 徳一 as the founder.
Mount Akaidake is 605 meters high and has a great view over the ocean.

The temple has been burned down by wildfires and the present main hall was erected in 1942, the priest compound in 1953 and the bell tower in 1974.
Recently a small pagoda has also been erected.
Many people come here to pray for an easy birth (anzan 安産祈願).

The compound is rather large and suited for a walk in nature to enjoy the atmosphere of old pine trees.

This temple is famous for the history of Minamoto no Tooru 源融 and Emperor Saga Tenno.
Kobo Daishi built this temple on the strong wish of Emperor Saga in 821.
chokugan, the strong vow or promise, and temples built on the behest of an emperor are often called "chokuganji" ちょくがんじ【勅願寺】.
The main statue of this temple was a Kannon with thousand arms, shown only once a year on January 18.
The large photo shows the old statue of Fudo Myo-O before the war. It is lost now. The hall for this "one wish Fudo" had also been built on behest of Emperor Saga.
Many people come here, make one vow or wish, walk around the statue once or sometimes even one hundred times.

The date of its establishment is not quite clear, but it might have been relocated from 麹町平河町 Kojimachi Hirakawachoin 1658. It was moved to 麻布六軒町 Azsabu Rokkencho.
During the Edo period, 兒稲荷 Kabuto Inari in the compound was quite popular.

江戸の五色不動のうちの目黄不動は、一般には江戸川区平井の最勝寺か台東区三ノ輪の永久寺とされているが、当院とする説もある。
寺伝によれば江戸開府以前の創建で、かつては麹町平川町（平河町）にあったという。万治元年（1658）、幕府の命により麻布六軒町の現在地に移転した。当時の住職は中野の宝仙寺の住職を兼ねていた玄海法印であった。
玄海法印は新しい境内地が狭かったため、近くの沼を埋め立てて境内を拡張することを願い出て許可された。
ところがこの沼には悪蛇が数多く住み着き、近くの住民を悩ませていた。そこで玄海が、先祖である武田信玄が所持していた十一面観音を本地仏として稲荷大明神を勧請し、七日七夜の調伏の祈祷を行ったところ、水面に長さ２丈（約６メートル）の巨大な悪蛇の死骸が浮き上がった。人々は玄海の法力に驚き、喜んで寺院の普請に協力したと伝えられる。
また、境内近くの池で洗い物をしていた夫人が神憑りとなり、稲荷神を不動院の境内に祀れば、必ず祈願を成就させ、火を防ぐと託宣した。そこで社殿を建立して祀られたのが児稲荷大明神であり、今も境内の一角に祀られている。
明治の初め、不動院の住職となった高野山の山科俊海師は、日本橋小伝馬町の牢獄の跡地で燐火が燃えるのを見た。俊海師はこの地の浄化を祈念し、寺院の建立を発願した。大倉喜八郎（大倉財閥の祖）、安田善次郎（安田財閥の祖）といった有力者などの支援も受け、明治８年（1875）大安楽寺を創建した。
現在も大安楽寺と不動院は兼帯であるため、不動院が留守の時は大安楽寺で納経を受け付けてもらえる。

This temple has been established by Kobo Daishi Kukai in 821. It was build on the strong behest of Emperor Saga for the wellbeing of the people. The statue of Fudo was carved by Kobo Daishi.
It is counted as one of the three most famous Fudo Temples.




This is a statue where people throw water over Fudo whilst making a wish.

滝谷不動明王寺　Takidani-fudou-myouou-ji
Takidani Fudo Myo-o Temple belongs to the Shingon Shuchizan school of Buddhism, and is located in Tondabayashi, Osaka.
Takidani Fudo Myo-o Temple is counted as one of three large Fudo in Japan. Praying at the temple is reputed to help prevent or cure eye diseases. As a result, the temple is also known as 'God of Eye' and 'Fudo of Sprout'.

The priest Kukai established the temple in 821. In 1463, it was moved to its present place. The temple's principal image is of Acala. The statues to Kongara and Seitaka are said to have been created by Kukai himself. These images are all designated as important cultural assets.

Monthly on the 28th day, a festival is held at Takidani Fudo Myo-o Temple to which over 30,000 people gather.
