a Shingon temple in Itoshima, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. Its honorary sangō prefix is Sennyo-ji Daihiō-in (千如寺大悲王院).
It is also referred to as Raizan Kannon (雷山観音).

According to legend, Sennyo-ji was founded in the Nara period by 清賀上人 Seiga, a priest who came from India.

Due to its position in the north overlooking the Sea of Genkai, it has been expected from the shogunate as a prayer temple of the foremost line against the Mongol invasions of Japan during the Kamakura period. In its heyday has been said to be lined up to 300 priest living quarters around the temple. Sennyo-ji is a general term of this temple, and it is also referred to as the priest's lodge that was located next to the middle sanctuary, the present day site of Ikazuchi-jinja. The wooden Avalokiteśvara statue is the subject of mountainous faith that has been enshrined in the main hall.
Afterwards the priest living quarters were ruined during the long war between Muromachi and Sengoku periods, there only remains the priest's lodge. In 1573, however, the main hall was founded by Kuroda Tsugutaka (1703–1775), the 6th feudal lord of Kuroda clan. Big maple trees, which has been designated as a natural monument of Fukuoka prefecture, has been said to be planted by him.

Mount Rai has two sanctuaries, one at the middle of the mountain and one at its peak. The middle sanctuary was founded in honor of Emperor Suinin whom he is conventionally considered to have reigned from 29 BC to AD 70. Both sanctuaries have been governed by the temple until the Edo period. However, the priest's lodge in the middle sanctuary was abolished by the separation of Shinto from Buddhism, introduced after the Meiji Restoration. Cultural properties, such as Buddha statues including the main Buddha and the ancient documents, were moved to the main hall.

The temple is also known for being a great place for cherry blossom viewing in the spring, and many people visit in the autumn to see the fall foliage.

Priest Seiga brought brought seeds from camellia (tsubaki　椿) and made oil from them for the first time.
Mount Aburayama 油山 (597 m)　in Fukuoka is named in memory of this event.

Takkoku no Iwaya Bishamondo 達谷窟毘沙門堂

岩手県西磐井郡平泉町平泉字北沢１６

The main statues are Bishamonten 毘沙門天 and Fudo Myo-O.

Founded by priest Enchin 円珍 in 807 in order to promote the development of the Northern Provinces in Tohoku. In 801 the government sent Sakanoue Tamuramaro to subdue chief 悪路王 Akuro-O. The deity Bishamonten was placed in the temple to show their thanks for the victory.
The buildings burned down various times but have always been re-built. The last re-built was in 1961.
Now people come here to pray for peace.
Some sources quote Jigaku Daishi for carving the statue of Bishamonten.

The main temple is in a cave (iwaya) but has a large compound in the mountains, the building is almost like the temple Kurama 鞍馬寺 in Kyoto, and housed 108 statues of Bishamonten in the Bishamonten Hall 毘沙門堂. Now 33 are still there and shown every 33 years.

(Waiting-for-ladies Fudo Hall)
, Takkoku-Seiko-ji Temple. It suggests a dubious legend disrespecting "Akuro-o,"  the legendary lord of the Emishi people.

According to the legend, "Akuro-o" (悪路王) and his followers often kidnapped high-born maidens from Kyoto, confined them in "Kagohime" (籠姫; lit. Maidens' Cage) upstream and enjoyed cherry-blossom-viewing with them in "Sakurano" (桜野; lit. Cherry Field) repeatedly.
They called a waterfall nearby "Himemachi-no-Taki" (姫待ちの滝; lit. "Fall of Waylaying Escaping Maidens"). They also called the stone near the cave "Katsura-Ishi " (鬘石; lit. [Maidens'] Wig Stone) because they cut the maiden's beautiful black hair as a warning to other kidnapped maidens.

Probably the Japanese people in later generations blindly wanted to believe Tamuramaro Sakanoue as a most respectable hero and Akuro-o ("Aterui" or "Acro-o") who fought with Sakanoue as an evil figure.

Kenji Miyazawa wrote a poem about "Acro-o" taking hint from this legend, titled "Haratai Kenbai Ren" (原体剣舞連; lit. "A Verse for Haratai [Village] Sword Dance," dated August 31, 1922) in Spring and Ashura.

Statue Height 28.9 cm



Bronze casting
The main part of the body is casting, some plaster and iron core remained inside.
The both hands joined together with dovetail tenon on the shoulder.
Curly hair and Benpatsu　(a long rope of hair hanging down the left side of the face and the left shoulder) with topknot on the head, with Tenchi-gan (a facial expression: the right eye is wide open looking upwards, and the left eye is half closed looking down to the earth), top and bottom fangs are stuck out, wearing a decorative scarf, ancient skirt and loincloth.
The left arm holds a rope to tie up evil spirits, the right arm holds a sarcred sword (missing) and hanging down on the side, and twisted at the waist and standing with both legs open.
The left arm (below shoulder), holding object and the rope are also added later. The rock-shaped pedestal is wooden and colored (added later). It is the work of Kamakura Period, and it is the favorable remain among the gild bronze small Fudomyo statues in the same period.

Seiganji temple belongs to the Shingon sect Ninnaji school.

On request of the Kamakura Bakufu government in 1244, 藤原親房 Fujiwara Chikafusa came to the region to supress the Heike completely. He changed his name to 門司 Moji and unified 6 districts under this name. In the course of history the region was governed by various local lords.
The temple is located in the South-Western part of the Moji peninsula and overlooks the 周防灘 Suo-Nada sea.
The founder of the temple, 心玉阿闍梨 Shingyoku Ajari, was the son of a rich farming family. He build it in 1863 as a place to pray for protection from fire and other natural disasters.
In the temple compound are some old trees and two special statues of Jizo Bosatsu

Founded by Kobo Daishi in 806, after he had visited 宗像大社 Munakata Shrine.
He carved statues of the three deities venerated at Munakata,
大日如来 Dainichi Nyoria, 釈迦如来 Shaka Nyorai and
薬師如来 Yakushi Nyorai.

Then he carved Fudo Myo=O to protect the people from all kinds of disaster.
「真言秘密の大法を伝え得たるは、
危難をお救い下さった不動明王様のお蔭に他ならず」

The temple is known for its beautiful blossoms in all seasons.

This is the last temple of the Kyushu Fudo Pilgrimage.
ketsugan, kechigan means the fulfillment of the vow to complete a pilgrimage.


福岡市博多区御供所町２－４ / Gokushomachi, Hakata Ward, Fukuoka

The temple was founded by Kūkai Kobo Daishi, who had come back from his travels to China and landed in Hakata.
It was completed in 806, making it the oldest Shingon temple in Kyushu.

The main statue is a standing Kannon with 1000 arms and 11 faces.
十一面千手観音 Juichimen Senju Kannon

The temple had the strong support of 黒田家墓 Kuroda Tadayuki (1602 - 1652), the second lord of Fukuoka province, who has his grave in the temple compound.

The temple is also Nr. 24 on a pilgrimage to
九州24地蔵 24 Jizo Bosatsu temples in Kyushu.

Fukuoka Daibutsu (Great Buddhist statue)
The carving of the statue started in 1988 and it took 4 years to finish. The statue is 10.8 meters in height and 30 tons in weight. This is the largest statue of a seated Buddha among the ones in Japan. The ring of light behind the Buddha stands 16.1 meters in height and is carved with numerous images of Buddha. Besides the statue is a treasure exhibition hall.

130 stone steps are leading up to the temple and old trees line the access path.
Founded in 807 when Kobo Daishi passed here and held a ceremony to appease the demons of the Yamizo mountains 八溝山




Situated in a huge park, with a stone cliff above the Fudo Hall.

One of the three new Henro pilgrimages in Japan.

It has been established by a monk called 慈忍 Jinin around 1835, after he completed the Henro walk in Shikoku. He wanted to give the priests, nuns and villagers, who could not travel to Shikoku, to have a chance to the benefit of a full pilgrimage. After his death, the caritable people of the village 篤志家 continued to support this project.

篠栗霊場の歴史は天保年間、慈忍という人物がこの地を訪れた天保六年に始まる。慈忍は四国八十八箇所を巡拝したその帰りに篠栗村に立ち寄った尼僧であった。四国八十八箇所の開祖たる弘法大師も訪れたと伝わるこの村の者達の困窮を垣間見た慈忍は、その救済を目論みこの地にとどまり弘法大師の名において祈願を続け、やがて村に安寧をもたらしたものと伝わる。このことを弘法大師の利益（りやく）であるとした慈忍は、村の者達に四国のそれを模した88か所の霊場の造成を提案。呼応した村人達の手によって徐々に石仏がつくられはじめ、慈忍が没したのちにおいて、その志を継ぐ村の篤志家達の尽力によって88に達する霊場群が完成、それが今にある篠栗霊場の起源であると伝わっている。なお、明治期、成立した霊場会に対し、一部の寺院が土地建物を買収し、本来の札所とは一部異なる、との批判もある。

秋保大滝 Akiu Great Falls

Akiu (Akiho) is a famous hot spring near Sendai with one of the famous huge waterfalls nearby.
The waterfall is about 55 m long and 6 meters wide.

Priest Ennin tried to built a temple at the mountain 長嶺山 near the waterfall, but could not succeed the first time. He continued his pilgrimage in Tohoku, toward the mountains of Dewa and in860 founded the famous Yamadera 山寺.
On the way back he was again stopped by the powerful energy of the waterfall and the forest and this time carved a statue of Fudo Myo-O himself. He established this temple as the "Oku no In" of Yamadera.

The Fudo Hall 不動堂 is on a cliff above the fall. Further down is a bridge over the river, 不動橋 Fudobashi .

Legend knows that in 1770 a priest performed austerities here for 1000 days 千日籠り to pray that his mother would be healed. And the powerful energy of this area indeed helped to get her well.

Saiko-ji, or Takimotosan (Mt. Takimoto) as it is officially called, is regarded as the inner shrine of Risshaku-ji in Yama-dera, Yamagata Prefecture. It is said that the priest Jikaku Daishi (also known as Ennin) founded Risshaku-ji during his preaching tour around Tohoku in the Jogan Period (856-875 CE), after undergoing a rigorous course of religious training for a hundred days at Akiu Otaki (a waterfall) located right beside the current Fudo-do (hall dedicated to Fudo Myoo).

The temple features a huge bronze seated statue of Fudo-myoo which is 3.3 meters in height, 5.1 meters around the waist, 7.2 meters around the knees, and has flaming nimbus 5 meters high.



In 1828 (year 11 of the Bunsei era), after completing the statue of Fudo, saint Chisoku Shonin 知足上人 jumped into the waterfall, praying for all people to have their wishes come true. Since then many people have prayed to the statue to grant them their wishes. Right behind the Fudo-do is Akiu Otaki, which is designated as a national area of natural beauty.
The statue of Fudo is said to have been cast during the Edo period, when Chisoku-shonin rebuilt the temple.

Akiu no taue odori 秋保の田植踊 rice-planting dance
Taue Odori (the rice planting dance) handed down in Akiu Town in Taihaku-ku, Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, is a traditional folk performing art that is nationally designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property. It is said that the dance dates back to the 12th century, when the Heike refugees, who settled in the Nagafukuro area, began the dance to recall the good old days.
This rice planting dance
is danced by a large number of dancers. It is said that as many as from 50 to 60 dancers or over 100 at peak time joined the dance in the past. The dances are dedicated to Nagafukuro Myojin Shrine, Baba Otaki Fudo-do Temple and Yumoto Yakushi-do Temple from the middle of April to the beginning of May every year.
Two boys
taking a part of “Yajuro” appear on the stage followed by the two young boys taking a part of “Suzufuri (the bell men)” and give the prologue, after which the rice planting dance is performed by 8 to 14 girl dancers called “Saotome” in hope for a rich harvest in the coming fall.
