01 - Kokubunji 国分寺 Kokubun-Ji

This temple has been erected in 741 by Gyoki Bosatsu. It has been protected by the feudal lords of Ouchi and Mori. In 1891 it has been re-located to its present location at Nambucho 南部町.

12 - Ryuuzooji 龍蔵寺 / 竜造寺 Ryuzo-Ji

This temple was founded in 698 by En no Gyoja. In 741 the priest Gyoki Bosatsu choose this place for his ascetic practises and venerated a statue of Kannon with 1000 arms. He also gave it its present name, Ryuzo-Ji. Dainichi Nyorai is venerated here. It is the oldest temple in Yamaguchi City.
Today the statue of Kannon with a horse-head (Bato Kannon 馬頭観音) is venerated in the main hall.
In the precincts is a famous Gingko tree of more than 1000 years. There is also a famous waterfall, Tsuzumi no Taki 鼓の滝, in three steps, altogether 37 meters steep.

This temple is one of the 18 Fudo pilgrim temples of Yamaguchi prefecture. This pilgrimage was started in 1989 with a wish for world peace. See below.



This Fudo Statue is about 10 meters high. It was built by the sculptor Kishi Takashi 貴志佳史.
It is Nr. 12 of the Yamaguchi Fudo Pilgrimage and contains reliques of the Buddha.
Is is a "Holy Fudo", Daisho Fudo Myo-O . 大聖不動明王.

18 - Myoken-Gu Juto-Ji 妙見山 鷲頭寺
It has been founded by Kudara-Oji Rinsho Taishi 琳聖太子, a prince of Korea, disputed ancestor of the Ouchi clan 大内 and been the family temple of the Ouchi clan ever since.
It is also strongly related to the belief in the Deity Myoken and thus a mixutre between shrine and temple.
On January 7 there is a great New Year Market in honor of the god Daikoku.
