sanzon 三尊 triad

- quote
sanzonbutsu 三尊仏
Also sanzonzou 三尊像, sanzon 三尊.
A set of three Buddhist deities appearing together. They form a triad with the principal image *chuuson 中尊 in the centre, and an attendant *kyouji, wakiji 脇侍 on each side.
Sanzonbutsu are often named according to the principal deity; for example Yakushi sanzonbutsu 薬師三尊仏 is a triad of *Yakushi 薬師 with two attendants, and
Amida sanzonbutsu 阿弥陀三尊仏 shows *Amida 阿弥陀 with two attendants.

Frequent triads include Amida appearing with *Kannon 観音 and *Seishi 勢至 as attendants, Yakushi depicted with *Nikkou Gakkou 日光・月光, and *Shaka 釈迦 with *Monju 文殊 and *Fugen 普賢.

These groupings are based on Buddhist scripture and were firmly established in Japan in the Nara period (645-794), so statues made prior to this period do not necessarily follow this pattern. The Shaka sanzonzou 釈迦三尊像 in Houryuuji *Kondou 法隆寺金堂 (Nara), for example, shows Shaka attended by Yakuou 薬王 and Yakujou 薬上. In the Heian period, with the introduction of esoteric Buddhism, a large number and variety of sanzonbutsu were made.

Especially important examples are the figures of *Fudou Myouou 不動明王 accompanied by *Kongara douji 矜羯羅童子 and *Seitaka douji 制た迦童子,

and *Bishamonten 毘沙門天 attended by *Kichijouten 吉祥天 and Zennishi douji 善膩師童子.

Ena Valley in Gifu 恵那峡 - 岐阜県

There are a few places related to Fudo in this region.

- quote
Ena Valley - 恵那峡 Ena-kyo
The uniquely shaped rocks create a stunning sight, especially when taking in the sights from a boat while brilliant maple leaves light up the entire valley!

Ena Valley is a beautiful scenic area whose man-made lake was originally formed because of the construction of a dam downriver. It is a river valley where, in the spring, cherry blossoms bloom in full force and, in the fall, the cliffs blaze red and yellow with autumn leaves. Enjoying this scenery with the added feature of strangely shaped rocks dotting the area is particularly fulfilling from a cruise boat, which takes you around the lake for 30 minutes of incredible sightseeing.

One of the best places around Ena Valley is the hot spring bath from where you can enjoy a fabulous view of the valley. Soaking in the bath in the early evening is highly recommended, as one can watch the setting sun in all of its glory. The Ena area is also famous for chestnuts and, therefore, for the Japanese sweet called kurikinton, a delicacy made from chestnuts that you simply must try!

盛岡聖天 永福寺 Morioka Shoten Eifuku-Ji
also known as
shusse Shooten 出世聖天 Shoten for a good career

The temple was first built in 794 in Sannohe 三戸 as one of the 奥州六観音 Six Kannon Temples in the Northern Oshu province by 坂上田村麻呂 Sakanoue no Tamuramaro,

On request of Godaigo Tenno 後醍醐天皇 (1288 - 1339) had a statue of the deity 大聖歓喜天 Daisho Kangiten placed here for worship.
The statue was made by 高野大師 Takano Daishi.

In 1615 when the capital of the Nanbu domaine was located in Morioka, temple Eifuku-Ji was also re-built there as the main temple for the lord of the domain to pray on orders of 南部利直 Nanbu Toshinao. It was placed in the Northern un-auspicious kimon 鬼門 direction of the new castle to protect it from evil influence. It had become a very rich temple in the city, comprizing the
本堂歓喜院 Main Hall for Kangiten
護摩堂 Goma-Hall for fire ceremonies, six quarters for special purposes
六供坊(池上坊・林蔵坊・蓮華坊・桜本坊・西坊・東坊)
and was thus the most important temple in Morioka 筆頭寺院.

At that time the "five important temples of Morioka" 盛岡五山 were also designated.

In the Meiji time it lost its power. Since the temple venerated a deity of esoteric Buddhism, it lost most of its buildings and its influence.

The Hall for Kangiten 歓喜院 was re-build in 1947 at its present location.

It used to be a powerful temple to worship Kangiten and had 45 statues of this deity from India. Therefore it was also called the
Shooten no gozan 聖天の御山 Sacred Temple of Shoten.

- quote
gooma-in 降魔印 - shokuchi-in 触地印 -
Also read sokuji-in ( Sk: bhusparsa-mudra). Also gouma-in 降魔印.
Earth-touchting mudra.
A type of hand gesture (Jp: *in 印, Sk: mudra) found on Buddhist images. The right hand is placed on the right knee with the palm turned down and the forefinger, pointing downward, almost touching the pedestal *daiza 台座 on which the image is sitting.
This mudra is based on the tradition that when the historical Buddha *Shaka 釈迦, meditating on the adamantine seat *kongou houza 金剛宝座, (Sk:Vajrasana) at Buddhagaya in India, was tempted by demons, he summoned the earth goddess, Sthavara, Kenroujishin 堅牢地神 by touching the earth with his right hand. With the help of the goddess, the Buddha dispersed the demons and then retained enlightenment gouma joudou 降魔成道 (goma jodo) (see *Shaka hassou 釈迦八相).

Hence this mudra is also called goma-in (mudra for subjugating demons).
As a symbol of the Buddha's subjugation of evil and his enlightenment, the shokuchi-in was often used in Indian Buddhist images of Shaka.

After the establishment of Esoteric Buddhism mikkyou 密教 it became the mudra for the Buddha *Ashuku 阿しゅく. In Esoteric teachings, Ashuku is considered to be the head bushu 部主 (Sk: kulesa) of the kongoubu 金剛部 (Sk: Vajrakula ; Adamantine Family) of deities who subjugate enemies of Buddhism.
Although Shaka images with the shokuchi-in are found in Asia, including the principal image *honzon 本尊 attended by the sixteen arhats *juuroku rakan 十六羅漢 at Sokkulam (Jp: Sekkutsuan 石窟庵) in Kyongju 慶州, Korea (751), very few examples have been found in Japan. The few extant examples seem to have been introduced from abroad, such as Buddha statues imported from Ming and Qing China. Other gilt-bronze images influenced by Tibetan Buddhism were brought to Japan from Manchuria and Inner Mongolia before World War II.

In Japan, the shokuchi-in is known as the mudra of Esoteric Buddhas, such as Ashuku in the Kongoukai 金剛界 (see *Kongoukai mandara 金剛界曼荼羅) and Tenkuraion 天鼓雷音 in the Taizoukai 胎蔵界 (see *Taizoukai mandara 胎蔵界曼荼羅). The earliest example of Ashuku with shokuchi-in was the principal of the Koudou 講堂 (presently Kondou 金堂) on Mt. Kouya 高野 (Koya-san), a temple which was founded by *Kuukai 空海(774-835), but this was lost when the building was burnt down in 1926. Having been kept as a secret Buddha *hibutsu 秘仏, no photograph was taken, and so there is no way of verifying whether or not it was the original image.

宮城県気仙沼市本町 1-4-16 / 1 Chome-4-16 Motomachi, Kesennuma-shi

In former times this region was within the influence of the Ezo Emishi 蝦夷 people from the North.

The temple is located on a hill overlooking the town of Kesennuma.
In 709, 藤原宇合 Fujiwara no Umakai (694 - 737) had been sent here to subdue these people. He killed many and placed their heads (which had been cut off as a sign of victory) on the Southern Mountain Range 南流山. This was the beginning of the temple.

Later in 742 行基菩薩 Gyoki Bosatsu passed here and carved the statue of Kannon.
In 850 慈覚大師 Ennin Jigaku Daishi built a small hall and founded a temple near the beach, Kaigan Kannon-Ji 海岸山観音寺.

Minamoto no Yoshitsune passed here and grieved for
Princess Minatsuru Hime 皆鶴姫.
He had the temple rebuild at the mountain with the present
Kannon Hall 観音堂.
Now it is called 瑞国海岸山観音寺 Kaiganzan Kannon-Ji.

In 1732, the 5th Daimyo 伊達吉村 Date Yoshimura visited here and collected a lot of money for repair work of the inner sanctuary.

The main statues are Kannon, Amida Nyorai and Fudo Myo-O.

Fujiwara no Umakai 藤原 宇合
(694 – September 7, 737) was a Japanese statesman, courtier, general and politician during the Nara period. The third son of Fujiwara no Fuhito, he founded the Shikike ("Ceremonials") branch of the Fujiwara clan.

He was a diplomat during the reign of Empress Genshō; and he was minister during the reign of Emperor Shōmu. In the Imperial court, Umakai was the chief of protocol (Shikibu-kyō).

716 (Reiki 2): Along with Tajihi no Agatamori (多治比縣守), Abe no Yasumaro (阿倍安麻呂) and Ōtomo no Yamamori (大伴山守), Umakai was named to be part of a Japanese diplomatic mission to Tang China in 717-718. Kibi no Makibi and the Buddhist monk Genbō were also part of the entourage.

724 (Jinki 1, 1st month): Umakai led an army against the emishi; but this military campaign was later judged to have been unsuccessful.

729 (Tenpyō 1): The emperor invested Umakai with the power to raise an army to quash a revolt, but the cause for alarm was dissipated without the need for military action.
737 (Tenpyō 9): Umakai died at age 44. A smallpox epidemic caused the deaths of Umakai and his three brothers.
