Takada is a small mountain village in the South-Western part of the Aizu plain along the river Miyagawa 宮川 . 80 percent of its space is mountain forest.
One of the famous shrines of the former Mutsu province 陸奥国二宮 and Iwashiro province 岩代・越後国境 is also located here.

The temple started out humbly as a sanctuary called 千寿院 Senju-In in the year 779.
Later in 848 Priest Jigaku Daishi 慈覚大師 Ennin built the first temple.
In 1190 円鑁沙門 rebuilt the temple and added the Yakushi Hall 薬師堂, giving name of "Yakushi Temple" 薬師寺 to the complex.

The temple has sessions of Zazen meditation of the Tendai sect of Buddhism.

Isasumi was designated as the chief Shinto shrine (ichinomiya) for the former Iwashiro province. From 1871 through 1946, Isasumi was officially designated one of the Kokuhei Chūsha (国幣中社, meaning that it stood in the mid-range of ranked, nationally significant shrines.

Though not backed by accurate historical records, some believe the place name Aizumisato derives from this shrine. The shrine is also the locale for the annual taue-shinji, or rice planting, Shinto ritual. This ritual has been performed in this shrine for centuries, and the Fukushima Prefecture has designated the shrine an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Currently, the festival of the rice planting is known as the Otaue Festival.

The festival falls on July 11 or 12 annually.
The rice planting ceremony, held during the daytime, is considered as important and reverential as the Asataue, or morning planting, ceremony of the Ise Grand Shrine and the Yutaue (evening planting) held at the Atsuta Shrine. The rice planting ceremony at the Isasumi Shrine is widely regarded as one of the highlights of the Shinto rituals.

Isasumi Shrine in Aizumisato-machi, which lies in the south west of the Aizu basin, is a myojin taisha or a high-ranking shrine that was listed in the Engishiki and is the second most revered of all shrines in the Tohoku District. Sunayama matsuri - "Sand mountain festival."  -砂山祭
A rite held on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month at Isasumi Shrine in Aizutakada Township, Ōnuma District, Fukushima Prefecture. Two mounds of sand are constructed on the shrine grounds (keidai) to serve as the ritual space.
The shiogamakami (kami of the urn for making salt from saltwater) who is enshrined in the aidono (a structure enshrining multiple kami) is transferred (kanjō) to the mounds of sand. Two priests wearing torikabuto (hats specifically worn by gagaku dancers) and ōnohana masks (masks with long noses) intone a secret chant while pounding three eight-sided stakes into the sand mounds with a hammer.
They present offerings and chant liturgies (norito), there is a dance by shrine maidens (miko), and all participants worship together. Rice cakes wrapped in bamboo leaves are presented as offerings (shinsen). The region is extremely mountainous and it was extremely difficult to obtain salt here in the past. The rite is held to ensure the availability of salt.
This festival is also called the endo matsuri.

The otaue matsuri held on July 12 at Isasumi Jinja in Aizutakada Town, Ōnuma County, Fukushima Prefecture, is known as one of the three taue of Japan along with Ise Jingū's asataue (Morning Rice Planting) and Atsuta Jingū's yūtaue (Evening Rice Planting).
At approximately ten o'clock in the morning, a shinkōsai begins with the first taiko. After a ritual shishioi (Lion Chasing) by the children, the second taiko signals the shinkō progression to the massha (branch shrine) Mita Jinja and an otaue matsuri takes place. The shishioi is composed of the following eight types of shishi masks: adult shishi, white shishi, dappled grey ponies, deer, lead oxen and following oxen, white horses, and red horses, along with a few hundred boys wearing headbands dressed in under-kimono with tasuki (cords for tying up sleeves).
After this group, the sacred palanquin (shin'yo) procession (togyo), with several hundred attendants wearing kamishimo (the formal dress of the samurai), sings a saibara (a kind of kagura performance) until arriving at Mita Jinja. After they have arrived at the shrine, a taue matsuri occurs in front of the shin'yo.
This is an immense round trip journey between the main shrine and Mita Jinja. It is also the custom to pass through the private houses along the road as the procession goes back and forth between the two shrines.

This statue is about 50 cm high. He holds the sword over his right shoulder as if swinging it now, not imovable right up in front.
The hair is looking like blown by the wind.
A very dynamic statue.

Kongoin Temple located in Ueno-machi, Hachioji City, Tokyo is a Bekkaku Honzan (a special headquarters) of the Shingon sect.
The main object of worship is Fudo Myoo. The temple is the 63rd fudasho-temple of the Kanto 88 Holy Sites, the 16th of the Buso 48 Kannon Sites, the 73rd of the Tama Shin-Shikoku 88 Holy Sites, and one of Hachioji Pilgrimage to Shichifukujin (the Seven Lucky Deities).



The temple was founded in 1576, when the priest Shinsei built a Fudo hall. In 1631, it was restored at this place as a sub-branch temple of Koyasan Kongobuji Temple and Jigenin Temple. The temple buildings were burned down by an air raid in 1945 and rebuilt in the post-war period.

Kongoin Temple is known for a large number of treasures, including the two statues of Jurojin and Fukurokuju of the Seven Lucky Deities, two Rokkyoku Byobu (six-panel screens) of Shihon Chakushoku Koyasan Zue (the illustrated description of Koyasan in color on paper) and Shihon Chakushoku Saiobo-zu (a painting of the Queen Mother of the West in color on paper), both of which are designated Tokyo Important Tangible Cultural Properties.

Acala transmits the teachings and the injunctions of Mahâvairocana to all living beings and whether they agree to accept or to reject these injunctions is up to them, Acala's blue/black body and fierce face symbolize the force of his will to draw all beings to follow the teachings of the Buddha. Nevertheless, Acala's nature is essentially one of compassion and he has vowed to be of service to all beings for eternity.

Acala also represents his aspect of service by having his hair knotted in the style of a servant: his hair is tied into seven knots and falls down from his head on the left side. Acala has two teeth protruding from out of his mouth, an upper tooth and a lower tooth.

The upper tooth is pointed downward and this represents his bestowing unlimited compassion who are suffering in body and spirit.

His lower tooth is pointed upward and this represents the strength of his desire to progress upward in his service for the Truth.

In his upward search for Bodhi and in his downward concern for suffering beings, he represents the beginning of the religious quest, the awakening of the Bodhicitta and the beginning of his compassionate concern for others.


It is for this reason that the figure of Acala is placed first among the thirteen deities.

'The Immoveable King of Light'

Fudō (Sanskrit: Acala, or Candamaharosana) is one of the Myō-ō (Vidyarajas), 'Kings of Light', personified spells and protectors of the esoteric Shingon sect of Japanese Buddhism. He is a constant enemy of illusion, pointing the way to enlightenment beyond the illusion of life and death. His name, Fudō, means 'Unmoving' and refers to the unchanging reality beneath his fierce exterior.

Fudō's attributes are the sword and the rope. With the sword he cuts through the evils of the world of illusion to show the reality beneath. Fudō is considered to be the patron of swordsmen. The sword in this statue is of particular interest, being in the shape of the sankosho or three-pronged vajra (thunderbolt), a Buddhist ceremonial instrument symbolizing the Buddha, the Lotus, and the kongotai or ultimate reality. With his rope Fudō ties the enemies of enlightenment. He is sometimes shown as the leader of the five 'Kings of Light', or with his attendants Kongara Dōji and Shitaka Dōji.

Early statues show Fudō with two staring eyes and a pair of fearful fangs, as here. The piece is carved in ichiboku zukuri style (sculpted from a single block of wood), the arms made separately.

A Kabuki actor plays a ferocious deity

Shunshō was the first woodblock print artist to design prints of Kabuki actors which actually captured their likeness (nigao-e). In this example, the immediately recognizable long nose, down-turned mouth and small close-set eyes of Danjūrō V have been superimposed on to the statue-like figure of the deity Fudō Myō-ō.

The Buddhist deity Fudō Myō-ō, 'The Immoveable God of Light', is the chastiser of enemies of the faith. He is always depicted carrying a sword to cut through evil and a rope to bind the enemies of enlightenment. He was also regarded as the tutelary (guardian) deity of the leading Danjūrō Ichikawa line of actors. The deity appears in the play Kite kaeru nishiki no wakayaka in an enormously popular scene, 'The stone statue of Fudō' (Sekizō no Fudō). Danjūrō V played this part four times. This print probably celebrates the opening of the season (kaomise) performance at the Nakamura theatre in the eleventh month of 1780. The deity stands on a rock below a waterfall, surrounded by flames, grasping his attributes of a sword and rope.

Totomi province
As with many of the provinces that can be paired as 'front' or 'back', Totomi province can be paired with Omi province, for while Omi is the "near faint sea", Totomi is the "distant faint sea". This is likely a reference to Lake Hamana and may have originated from its position in antiquity as the outer reaches of the Yamato polity (Hara 1986). In 642, an imperial edict conscripting workers from around the country designated that span as 'from Totomi in the east to Aki in the west'.

Throughout history, Totomi has been closely connected with the provinces of Ise and Mikawa due to their geographical locations. According to the Nihongi, by the early 8th century, soon after a visit by Empress Jito (r. 686-697) in 702, Totomi was designated as a chugoku, or "province of middling distance" from the capital, while Mikawa was considered a kinkoku, or "province near to" the capital.

The Tokaido, or Eastern Sea Route, was officially named in the latter half of the 7th century and passed north of Lake Hamana. This was one of the routes designated throughout the country for conducting official business, and continued to be used throughout Japan's history, later becoming one of the major routes for daimyo traveling to Edo for the Sankin Kotai.

Since the mid-5th century, the Mononobe family and their kin appear to have been powerful in the region as provincial chieftains. Evidence including genealogies, place names, and local legends seem to point to a connection with the Mononobe playing a large role in the early history of Totomi and nearby provinces.

In 772, eight townships were carved out of Saya district to form the Yamana district. Of those eight, six were listed in the Heian-period Wamyosho. A Tokugawa period gazeteer, Kakegawa shiko, mentions that the Yamana district was so named by dropping the 'shi' off of Yamanashi--possibly the original name for the district.
