福島県いわき市平赤井字赤井嶽1 - 水晶山玉蔵院常福寺
The main statue of this temple is Yakushi Nyorai, Buddha of Medicine.
In 724 there was a great earthquake in the region and famine and diseases followed. To help the poor people a temple to the Buddha of Healing was erected in 806 by priest Genkan 善無畏三蔵 (大和国鷲峰山の住僧源観上人).
Other sources quote Tokuitsu 徳一 as the founder.
Mount Akaidake is 605 meters high and has a great view over the ocean.
The temple has been burned down by wildfires and the present main hall was erected in 1942, the priest compound in 1953 and the bell tower in 1974.
Recently a small pagoda has also been erected.
Many people come here to pray for an easy birth (anzan 安産祈願).
The compound is rather large and suited for a walk in nature to enjoy the atmosphere of old pine trees.

At the 薬師堂 Yakushi Hall of 閼伽井薬師 Akai Yakushi
ReplyDeletethere is a stone in the form of a 独鈷 Tokko, which looks very much like the real thing. But now it is not there any more.
There is also a well (Akai 閼伽井) where Kobo Daishi had hit with his 独鈷 Tokko to produce healing water for eye diseases.
